Treaty with the Christian Indians, 1856

Articles of Agreement and Convention made and concluded at Fort Leavenworth in the Territory of Kansas, on the 16th day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty six by Benjamin F. Robinson, as Commissioner on the part of the United States together with Frederick Samuel, Joseph H. Kilbuck and Job Samuel, principal men and duly appointed to act for the Christian Indians occupying lands within the Delaware region in Kansas Territory, of the one part, and Gottlieb F. Oehler in behalf of the Board of Elders of the Northern Diocese of the Church of the United Brethren in the United States of America, which Board is entrusted with the management of the Mission affairs of said Church in this country, of the other part.

Article 1. 

The said Christian Indians cede to the said Board of Elders &c. the following parcels of land, forming part of the lands belonging to them in the said Delaware Cession in Kansas Territory; that is to say: The South half of the South West quarter of Section Number Seven, containing eighty acres of land, and also the South west quarter of the South east fractional quarter of Section Number Seven, containing forty acres of land, both in Township Number Nine South of Range Number Twenty three east of the sixth principal Meridian in Kansas Territory, being, in part, the lands heretofore and now occupied by the Agents of the said Board of Elders &c. and embracing their improvements.

And to confirm the said cession the said Christian Indians do hereby request the President of the United States, and he is hereby authorized to issue a patent or patents in fee simple for the said lands to the said Board of Elders &c. or to such person or persons, as the said Board may direct, which Board is located at the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

In consideration of the said cession of lands hereby made, the said Gottlieb F. Oehler in behalf of the said Board of Elders &c. hereby agrees to pay to the said Christian Indians the sum of Fourteen hundred and forty dollars, $1440.00 dollars, in full payment and satisfaction for the said cession.

In testimony whereof, the said hereinbefore named parties have hereunto set their respective hands and seals at the place and on the day and year hereinbefore written.

I, Henry Tiblow, United States Interpreter for the Delaware Agency in Kansas Territory, do hereby certify that the foregoing articles of Convention were by me, on this 16th day of December and before the execution of the same, fully and truly interpreted to the said Frederick Samuel, Joseph H. Kilbuck and Job Samuel, named therein, and the contents thereof justly made known to them, and each of them in the presence of the said Benjamin F. Robinson, United States commissioner, and the said Gottlieb F. Oehler named therein, and the witnesses whose names are attached thereto.
